0.7: The Color Chapter

Updated the source on my dev environment, and incremented the version from 0.6 to 0.7. I have been reading a great book by Steve Sounders titled "High Performance Web Sites". Highly recommended, as it provides quick and simple instructions on aspects around how to improve page response times. I implemented some of the items from the book that I had already been preparing for in my code.

7-Month Milestone

Well, today I've reached another milestone. I should start outlining how I want to proceed, but I've been so focused on coding that I haven't had much energy to do much else. Between yesterday and today, I managed to get the site and database ported over my web hosting provider on a staging/development domain name. That makes it sound like it was an easy feat, but it wasn't.

Six Months In

The value of knowledge

Y'know, this is quite a large project. I've been steadily adding functionality, which requires a bit of work on each step. First, I update the database model, then I update the PHP model, then I add create, edit, and view HTML for inserting, updating, and presenting the model. Then, I add custom styles and JavaScript that are appropriate to only those screens. Then, I...well, you get the picture.

Design from a database perspective

The project is starting to snowball now. All the preparation and initial work helped to create the momentum that I have now. I'm really pleased with how it is coming along, but I am quickly grounded by the reality of how huge the scope has become. Naturally, I'm not coding all of my wildest ideas, but I did create a database schema that is incredibly well-thought-out, in terms of scalability and flexibility.

Everything from scratch

So, it's been a little while since I posted much. I honestly don't know how much has changed since then (don't feel like referring back to it), but that's because I know it's a lot. After completing the proof-of-concept and a design prototype, I've started coding what will become the beta version, complete with the ability for beta users to highlight and blackout screenshots with notes. Yeah, it's that serious.

Dealing with digital names

Well, I finally decided on a name that I will be using to launch the beta of the software. I found a quality, 11-character domain name that fits the concept of the project, allows for future expansion, and just has a good vibe to it. I have been pondering and writing down name ideas in my brainstorming document, going so far as to create a mind map of terminology that is related to the project.
